English Electric P.1A (WG760) at the Royal Air Force Museum, Cosford. This is one of the prototype Lightnings and first flew in August 1954. The 60 degree sweepback of the wings and the low position of the tailplane gave cause for concern. This aircraft and the Short SB5 (which allowed the wing sweep to be changed and the tailplane position to be altered and can also be seen at Cosford) confirmed the concept. In August 1954, this aircraft became the first British aircraft to exceed Mach 1 in level flight.
