The Saunders-Roe SR53 (XD145) at RAF Museum, Cosford was designed to investigate the possibility of a rocket plus jet aircraft. Two were built and XD145 made it's first flight on 16th May 1957. However, the other SR53 crashed, killing it's pilot, and the project was cancelled.
