Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird  U-2C (64-17962) in the American Air Museum at Duxford


The Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird  U-2C (64-17962) is now resident inside the American Air Museum at Duxford. This aircraft first flew in April 1956 and soon afterwards was delivered to Beale AFB. During it's 24 year operational career it made a number of detachment visits to Mildenhall in the UK, it also set an altitude record of just over 85,000 feet in July 1976. Following retirement in 1990 it was stored for eleven years before being presented to the Imperial War Museum. Dismantled and transported to Duxford in 2001, it is the only SR-71 Blackbird outside the USA.
