Republic F-105D Thunderchief (59-1822) was shipped to Duxford for permanent preservation in 2001. It is pictured in the restoration hanger in March 2003. This particular aircraft was initially assigned to 4520 Combat Crew Training Wing at Nellis AFB, Nevada in March 1961. In October 1963 it joined the 335th Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW) at George AFB, California. Later on in it's operational career, it flew from Korat AFB, Thailand as part of the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) and then the 388th TFW. It was during the latter that, in September 1968, it sustained light combat damage. The following year it flew further combat missions in the Vietnam War from Takhili AFB, Thailand. After over 3,500 flying hours, this aircraft was finally retired in the early 1980's and was then stored for 20 years at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona.
