Grumman FM-2 Wildcat (40467/G-RUMW) - Click for Full Image

Pictured in the Fighter Collection hanger at Duxford is airworthy Grumman FM-2 Wildcat (G-RUMW) is in the colours of the Fleet Air Arm. This carrier-borne aircraft often suffers in comparison with its successors, the Hellcat and Corsair, in the same way that the Hurricane always seems to be eclipsed by the Spitfire. However, in the same way that the Battle of Britain was not lost due to Hurricanes, the Pacific Air War was not lost due to Wildcats. Although it could be outperformed by Japanese Zeros it was more rugged and the use of team tactics made it a formidable foe.
